Why gas problems start in Penrith homes

Gas faults here sort into three kinds, and they belong to different halves of the district.

Winter mornings out here are colder than the coast because there is nothing nearby to hold the overnight temperature up. Gas heating still earns its place in the older houses for that reason.

The risk is an unflued heater in a room without adequate ventilation, or any heater that has not been serviced in years being fired up on the first cold morning. Sizing, when the new appliance is bigger

Gas lines are sized for a load. A modern six-burner cooktop or a larger heater can demand more than whatever it is replacing, and a line that was adequate for the old appliance may not be for the new one.

I can smell gas. What do I do right now?

Get everyone outside first. Do not touch a light switch, a power point, an appliance or anything else that could spark, and that includes the doorbell and the garage door. Do not use a phone inside the house. Once you are outside, turn the gas off at the meter if you can reach it safely, then ring from the footpath. It is not paperwork for its own sake: unlicensed gas work voids home insurance, and if something goes wrong afterwards the fact that it was never certified is the first thing an insurer looks for. What is a gas compliance certificate, and why does it matter?

It is the document a licensed gas fitter issues certifying the work meets AS/NZS 5601. In NSW it is lodged with the gas supplier and a copy comes to you. It matters for three practical reasons: your insurance can be argued down to nothing if uncertified gas work is found after an incident, a conveyancer will ask for it when you sell, and it is the only proof the installation was ever pressure tested. We issue one on every gas job, included in the price. If a quote does not mention a certificate, ask why before accepting it.

It gets so hot here. Is a gas heater even worth keeping?

The summers are the extreme, but the winter mornings out here are genuinely cold, colder than the coast, because there is no ocean nearby to moderate the overnight low. That wide swing is exactly why so many established Penrith homes still run gas heating and why it is worth servicing rather than ripping out.
